Canterbury Park To Add Casino To Racetrack

SHAKOPEE, MN – Canterbury Park wants to become a “Racino,” by adding a casino to its horserace track.

The Shakopee-based Canterbury Park Holding Corp. said it has plans to build a 100,000-square-foot facility with room for slot and video gaming, a hotel and conference center, and an agriculture event facility at its existing 367-acre site in Shakopee.

Expanding Canterbury Park to the “Racino” concept would cost about $50 million.

Canterbury Park said that the new facilities would generate at least $55 million in new state gaming taxes, about $1.5 million in local taxes and more than 1,000 new full and part-time jobs.

Canterbury Park has offered limited gambling at its 50-table card club, which opened in the third quarter of 2000. The card club, which also provides betting on races at tracks in other states, had revenue of about $4.5 million in the second quarter this year.

Canterbury Park had second quarter revenue of $11.9 million, with net income of $613,000.

The state legislature must approve the proposed expansion before work can start.
